December Athlete of the Month- Kevin Holbert
I still remember my introductory workout with Kyle; It made me realize how out of shape I really was. After getting out of the Navy many years prior, fitness took a back seat to life and I allowed myself to get into a rut. After realizing that I needed to turn things around, I started working out at a globo gym with no clue about what I was doing… needless to say it didn’t help much. I then ran a few Spartan races, and when I struggled to complete them, I decided to look for a better solution to make myself stronger. That’s when I found Old Line. That was over three years ago, and I am proud to be considered one of Old Line’s original members.
Over the past few years I consistently became stronger and fitter. But eventually my progress plateaued and I realized something needed to change. After learning about the positive results a fellow Old Line member experienced using the RP program, I decided to give it a try. On the RP program, I realized how diet is key to everything. Not only did my body asthetics change drastically, but my workouts did as well. I’ve always been a competitive person, and I had always tried to keep up with other members in the gym and RX the workouts. However, during the past few months I decided to dial that back and instead focus on being more efficient and achieve the desired stimulus during the workouts even if that meant cutting the weights back and not doing the workout as prescribed. This made a huge impact, and I started moving through the workouts much faster, I’ve had the ability to work harder, and it became easier push through the suck. I quickly realized I was becoming much fitter. During a recent visit to the doctor, my resting heart rate was noted at 55 bpm. The doctor initially though that it couldn’t be right, but after learning that I regularly do CrossFit, the doctor clarified that a heart rate that slow at my age is reserved for elite athletes. That made me reailze that I was in the best shape of my life, because at 37 years old… with the resting heart rate of an athlete and having clearly defined abs for the first time in my life….I am stronger and fitter than I have ever been.
I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without the support from my wife Amy and my girls Madison and Gabrielle… All three of whom workout at Old Line as well. I love the days when all four of us are in the gym together, and it brings me great joy and pleasure to be able to experience and share this with all of them. Being a father of high-level, competitive female athletes it became important to me to lead by example. It would be hypocritical of me to tell them to go workout if I wasn’t willing to do the same, and we all work together to ensure we live a healthy lifestyle overall.
I also wanted to thank the coaches and members of Old Line. You have all become an extended family to us, and have provided the most supportive environment which we are lucky enough to be a part of daily. After getting out of the military, I searched for an environment that would provide the same level of comradery, and it’s safe to say that I’ve found that with our Old Line family. I can’t think of any other situation that could provide a continual level of friendship and support whether it be helping another Old Line member move, helping needy families during the holidays, or taking time out of their busy weekends to support one another during a competition. These are just a few of the many reasons I’m proud to be a member of Old Line.
Lastly and most importantly I want to thank Dave, Jason, Kyle, Erika, Johnny and Liz. I definitely could not have done any of this without your experienced guidance and consistent expert coaching. The one bit of advice I would provide for anyone considering CrossFit is to take advantage of the extensive knowledge each of the coaches at Old Line have. They know what they are talking about and want all of us to live a happier and healthier life!
